WVU Mountaineer Monit Bear, a plush soft bear is nicknamed after to West Virginia motto, "Motani semper liberi" which is Latin for "Mountaineers are always free". The motto which appears of the state seal was adopted as the official West Virginia motto in 1872. Mont represents the state animal, the black bear. With his coonskin cap and a buckskin-like scarf, he also represents the West Virginia University Mascot, the Mountaineer. The Mountaineer is celebrating 70 years as the school's mascot in 2006-2007. Monti was designed exclusively for Friends of West Virginia University Hospitals.
